Brookings, S.D. – Top-seeded South Dakota State (SDSU) defeated eighth-seeded Villanova 23–12 to extend their unbeaten run to 27 games in a thrilling FCS playoff match. The reigning national champions performed commandingly with outstanding offensive players and special teams emphasized plays.
Special Teams Brilliance:
Early on, SDSU’s special teams were crucial despite difficult wind conditions. Villanova’s opening possession faltered deep in their territory, deflecting the punt, which SDSU recovered inside the red zone. The opening three points of the game came from this crucial play that established the tone.
With a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown and an impressive block by Matthew Durrance in the second quarter, SDSU’s special teams regained momentum.
Offensive Explosion:
The foundation was built by special teams, but the second half saw a surge in SDSU’s offensive production, accounting for 279 of the team’s 343 yards.
Mark Gronowski, the quarterback, completed 11 of 19 throws for 101 yards and a touchdown, but Isaiah Davis, the running back, stole the show with 192 rushing yards. Against the Wildcats, Davis’ game-winning 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter proved to be the deciding factor.
